One Last Hunt

12/15/07 Some winters come early. A few years ago, we had 18" of snow October 18th and it never left. Sure, you can keep hunting birds, but once the snow gets so deep that the birds are in farm yards and need to feed all day just to survive, I tend to give them more of a break.
This fall, we could hunt until the calendar told us we had to quit. This was one of those days that you remember all winter: the dogs behaved like they're supposed to, the birds held fairly well (for December), great weather and decent shooting. Dad and I had a mixed bag of Huns, sharptail and pheasants. We prefer the Huns this time of year, but we can't complain when a cranky rooster gets up where the Huns should is good.
